“Happy Easter to Adolph!”
Two United States Army Air Forces ground crewman in Southern Italy paint “Easter Eggs” on AN-M65 1,000-pound bombs with the message: “Happy Easter to Adolph!”
The ground crews were an essential, yet forgotten, component of the success of the bombing campaigns during and throughout the war. They were a rough bunch, usually from rural backgrounds. They liked to play harmonicas, joke, and have a game of craps like most Soldiers during the time. The crewman treated the bomber pilots as their own and did everything to ensure their planes were safe and fully capable.
